It’s that time of year again when the nights are drawing in, shadows are getting longer and colour in nature is all around. I’ve always adored the month of October and here we are, upon the start of the year’s tenth month. This is the month things start getting super busy for The Chunky Needle. Workshops are abundant, opportunities are afoot and people start thinking about what will end up under “the tree” in a few months time.
This year I’ve decided not to showcase at any Christmas markets or similar type events. 2018 was our launch year and as such, I jumped at expensive opportunities to cart my wares all around the country. Let’s just say, “I’ve learnt from experience.” Markets and large scale showcase events are amazing opportunities to meet other Makers and to interact with the public. It’s wonderful getting feedback on the products I painstakingly make and get tips from others “in the know.” I do get a thrill chatting with everyone and always enjoy whipping out my supersized needles and doing an ad hoc demo right there in my stand.
Looking back I’m a little “rose tinted glasses” and am a bit gutted I’m not signed up for anything this year. Perhaps I’ll do it bi-annually…..? The thing is, Christmas events are super expensive to attend. The coverage and promotion CAN be worth it, but in the long run, one must do a serious cost benefit analysis. That’s what I’ve done this year. The shear volume of stock I had to produce for my two Christmas events last year was eye watering. Merino ain’t cheap! Without any guarantee of sale, it’s a risky proposition attending these shows. Both events despite giving amazing contacts and coverage, sadly were a bit lackluster when it came to sales. As a result, I had a huge January sale! HA!
This year I’m sticking close to home. I’m going to push the online sales and work hard doing the workshops over November/December. Christmas wreath workshops are launching hard this year and are proving to be popular. Stay tuned, there may be a cheeky stocking workshop in there too. Raising a young family, running a small biz and trying to navigate Instagram’s algorithm take up nearly all the hours in the day.
Anyway, I’m going to leave this blog short. Actually hadn’t even intended on writing tonight, but sometimes the words just flow organically. Christmas Santa hats, knitted tree toppers, wreaths, et al. will be dropping soon. As always, every single item is made by me alone. I don’t source out my work. The Chunky Needle is truly me, a solo enterprise and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Isn’t it lovely actually knowing where your product has come from? I think so.
Have a lovely start to October. Do keep an eye on upcoming workshops. Arm knitting workshops are hitting hard in October!
Stay Chunky loves.
